Ancient Rome Tour: Colosseum, Roman Forum and Palatine Hill

Did you know that in Antiquity there used to be a massive bronze statue portraying Emperor Nero, which was taller than the Statue of Liberty?

Did you know that the Colosseum was built on top of a man made pool, which was as long and wide as the arena is today?

the-stage-floor-in-the-colosseumRome is a beautiful city like no other. A cultural jewel whose importance to modern society cannot be understated, boasting an unrivalled depth of architectural wealth and famous landmarks. But real history is ultimately made by people; buildings are just the shells their life stories leave behind. There is only so much you can learn (and more importantly understand) by walking through a ruin with a brief audio-guide, or by reading the plaques at a museum. The goal of this tour is to show you the magnificence of the Colosseum but other than that, to bring Ancient Rome’s Society to life, delving deep into the lives of notable Emperors such as Nero, Vespasian and his son Domitian. Not only you will be amazed by the grandiosity of the arena itself but together with that, your English speaking tour guide will also teach you why the Colosseum came to be. Your Colosseum tour will teach about more than just gladiators. After the visit inside of the Colosseum, together with your passionate tour guide you will see the 4th century AD arch of Emperor Constantine, while on your way to the Roman Forum, hence what it was the city centre of Rome in the Classical World. Your Colosseum tour will teach about more than just gladiators. You’ll learn about everyday life in Ancient Rome. Here you’ll encounter the stores of moneylenders; the final resting place of Julius Caesar; and the Temple of the Vestal Virgins, whose namesake were charged with keeping the sacred flame alive, plus the grave responsibility of bestowing clemency on men condemned to death.

  1. Arianna was the most wonderful tour guide – we cannot praise her highly enough. It’s not easy catering to a family with 7,9,11 & 13 year olds but she was informative, interesting, great at suspense & intrigue and held everyone’s attention for the full duration of the tour. It made the most enormous difference to our entire week in Rome having all the stories and context and information in our minds from Arianna as we visited more sites. The greatest decision to have come to you for this tour – so many thanks.

  2. Massimo was fantastic he really made the places come to life with his stories, very knowledgeable and a credit to your team

  6. Massimo was an incredible guide! He was personable and entertaining. He made the history of the sights we were seeing come alive for the adults as well as the teens in our family. It was an extremely hot day, however, our family was engaged throughout the entire tour and really enjoyed Massimo’s storytelling style. Wonderful experience!

  7. Massimo was a superstar. His passion, his humour and his near perfect command of English made this the most enjoyable tour our trip. Importantly, he was really easy to understand without having to concentrate. He brought ancient Rome to life.

  8. Massimo was fantastic and really brought the tour to life. The tour itself was great and worth doing first thing if it us the height of summer. Definitely recommend- well organised and again a first class guide.

  10. We were able to book a last minute private tour of the Colosseum, Forum and Palantine Hill with Massimo/Storytelling Rome and it was wonderful. Massimo is incredible. He delivered the history of the Colosseum and the events that led up to its creation while also telling us about the daily life, customs, beliefs and superstitions of classical Rome in a way that I have never experienced. It was all fascinating but he made it even more so by drawing parallels to modern life presenting the details in a very animated way and with a humor that at times made us laugh out loud. I highly recommend this tour and will be back to take his other tours the next time I am in Rome.
